The great Wildebeest migration is an annual ongoing event, where over two million wildebeest and zebra migrate through the Serengeti in Tanzania and into Kenya and back again. The migration is in Tanzania throughout the year apart from August and September, when they are grazing in the Masai Mara in Kenya.

Welcome to Tanzania!

Your Travel Seasons guide will be waiting for you at Kilimanjaro International Airport. We will then drive to your accommodation in Arusha (approximately a 1.5 hours drive, depending on traffic and time of arrival.) We will leave you to relax in the hotel for remainder of the day.

Today we will visit The Umoja Centre, an exciting youth education project supporting vulnerable teens gain vital education and life skills. After a tour of the centre, one of the students will show you their home and community, giving you an insight into life in Arusha. Enjoy a traditional Tanzanian lunch with the staff and students of Umoja.

After lunch your Travel Seasons will show you the highlights of Arusha City, including the colourful central market and Tanzanite museum. We will end the tour at the leafy green Arusha Coffee Lodge, where we will visit Shanga, a fascinating project supporting people with disabilities.

After breakfast, you’ll be transferred to Arusha Airport for your flight to the Kogatende area of the Northern Serengeti. Enjoy this short flight and the view of Tanzania below. Your guide will be waiting at the airstrip to transfer you to the camp for lunch and an afternoon rest.

The Serengeti National Park is one of the greatest and most acclaimed national parks in the world, spanning over 14,000 km² and teeming with extraordinary wildlife. The name Serengeti comes from a Maasai word meaning ‘endless plains’. The Serengeti is synonymous with an African safari, with vast sweeping savannah landscapes, rocky look-outs and stunning sunsets. It is an important place to visit for many dreaming of an African safari and for good reason too.

Later in the afternoon we will embark on your first game drive into the Serengeti.

After breakfast, we’ll start our game drive around the Kogatende area in search of the wildebeest migration, heading to the Mara River. If you are lucky and patient, you may get to witness the dangerous crossing whereby the wildebeest and zebras brave the river’s currents and the crocodiles that lie beneath. This deadly crossing is made by thousands of animals annually as they follow the pastures into the Masai Mara in Kenya. Another early start and we will be heading to the Sereonera region in Central Serengeti, through the plains of Togoro and the Mbuzi Mawe kopjes on our way to cross the Banagi River.

Although populations fluctuate, there are an estimated 3 million large game animals in the Serengeti, including over 2,500 lions, 1.2 million wildebeest and over 200,000 zebras. You will also have the opportunity to see the ‘big five’; rhinoceros, elephant, leopard, buffalo and lion as well as giraffes, baboons, colobus monkeys, gazelles, antelopes, crocodiles, hippos, waterbuck, hartebeest and more! This vast and varied park is home to more than 500 bird species; including ostriches, vultures, martial eagles, kori bustards, crowned crane and secretary birds.

After breakfast we will enjoy at game drive to the main Serengeti gate and stop for a picnic lunch. Heading towards the Ngorongoro Crater we will pass through varied landscapes and micro-climates – vast plains, sweeping hills and dense forests. We will arrive early evening at your selected accommodation.

After breakfast we will head out of the Serengeti and make the journey to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Ngorongoro Crater, one of Africa’s safari highlights. The name Ngorongoro is from a Maasai word meaning ‘Gift of Life’. You will begin with taking in the magnificent views from the crater rim before descending into the crater itself. You will have the opportunity to see elephants, lions, buffalo, zebra and many other species of animals and birds. We will enjoy a picnic lunch overlooking the hippo pool. In geological terms, the Ngorongoro Crater is actually a caldera, caused by the collapse of a large volcano 2-3 million years ago. The crater floor covers over 260 km² while the depth is some 610 m. Ngorongoro Crater is beautiful at any time of year and teaming with wildlife. You may experience clear views of the crater bowl or mists rolling down into the base – either way a memorable experience.
